The Truth about Quitting

Posted · Add Comment

You’ve been trying hard.  You’ve been doing everything the doctors and the therapists have told you to do.  You still can’t dress yourself or do the simple things without help.  You wonder if all this effort is even worth it.  After all, this is hard and you didn’t sign up for life to be hard.  Maybe it’s time to give up!

I can say all these things because I felt them.  I wondered when I would make real progress when I was in therapy.  I wondered when I would be able to walk upstairs without having to sit down on every step. I wondered when I would simply be able to swallow again without having to think about it.  Everything was too hard.

I want to tell you that when everything is too hard for you, it doesn’t mean that it’s time to give up.  It doesn’t mean it’s time to quit.  It means that it’s time to step up to God and seek His face.  It means you must trust Him from moment to moment and day to day.  After all, quitting is not about giving up on yourself, it’s about giving up on trusting God.

The good news is that God does everything He can to remind you He’s near.  He gives you friends who are tireless in their efforts to stay close.  He gives you a family that works as hard as you do to see that you succeed in getting better.  He gives you doctors and medical teams to strengthen and renew you.  He makes sure you’re never alone.  The closer you walk with Him, the more aware you are of His help and His presence.

When you feel like quitting, do this.  Turn to God and simply tell Him that you cannot do anything alone.  You need His help.  As soon as you do that, He’ll be there with a team of helpers.  Whether you are talking about recovering from illness or simply finding your way in life, you can’t do it alone, and God doesn’t want you to.  Trust Him to show up in big ways for you today.

As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.

Psalm 18:30, NKJV
