Some Assembly Required

Posted · 1 Comment

Did you ever buy something you wanted from the store, perhaps a toy for one of your grandchildren or a new bookcase, and then you read the words, “Some assembly required?”  I don’t know about you, but I can tell you I don’t like seeing those words stamped on the package.  I prefer things to be delivered in one piece, all assembled and ready to go.

I’m thinking that God may have smiled a bit at me while I went through the recovery process from my stroke.  After all, some assembly was certainly required since my physical body and mind needed to re-learn to function together.  I had to learn to walk and not fall over.  I had to learn to tie my shoes and feed myself and drive the car.  These were things that I once knew how to do without even thinking and suddenly, I had to hope everything would function as it should.  Some assembly was definitely required.

Sometimes when you build something like a new bookshelf or a tricycle for your grandson, you discover to your dismay that a couple of bolts are somehow left over.  You put everything together without them.  You have a choice then.  You can take everything apart and try again or you can simply adapt to the situation.

After a stroke, you may not be able to go back totally to your original self.  You may have to learn to adapt to a new you.  For example, I had to learn not to fill my tea cup all the way to the top.  My left hand shakes a little and I can spill the contents if I’m not careful.  I also had to learn to adapt to the fact that I have limited peripheral vision.  I have to really watch my side mirrors when I drive.

Whatever changes you’ve been through, you can be sure that God knows exactly where you are and what you need.  He’ll help you adapt to your new situation and when you need something more, He’ll make sure the right people come to help you.  After all, some assembly may be required.

Be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid … and don’t be frightened, because the Lord your God will go with you. He will not leave you or forget you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6, NCV
