At the Heart of Giving

Anyone who has the gift of serving should serve. Anyone who has the gift of teaching should teach.Whoever has the gift of encouraging others should encourage. Whoever has the gift of giving to others should give freely. Anyone who has the gift of being a leader should try hard when he leads. Whoever has the gift of showing mercy to others should do so with joy.

Your love must be real.

Romans 12:7-9, NCV

I always thought I understood what it means to be a giving person.  I did my best to take care of my family and the people who worked for me.  I gave to charity and to church.  I can tell you now though, that my understanding of what it means to be a giver has changed.

Since I’ve recovered from my strokes over ten years ago now, I recognize that God not only worked with me to heal my body, but He worked with me to heal my heart and to help me truly understand what it means to give to others.

Giving at any level has little to do with what you gave, and everything to do with the condition of your heart.  When your heart feels close to God, when you’re living in God’s presence as much as possible, He helps you to see the world with His eyes.  He causes you to want to give because you have more compassion and more empathy.  He motivates you with a love you may not have even known was possible for you.

Giving from your heart means that whatever you give of your time, talent, and financial support is done for the right reasons.  You give because you are a cheerful giver, one who truly wants to please God. You are God’s ambassador here on earth and so each time you offer to serve others, encourage those around you and give any gifts God has given you, the kingdom thrives.  Everyone receives the joy.

May God bless your heart and make your love real.  May He motivate you to give generously of your time, your encouraging words and your unique gifts to those around you.
