When There’s Too Much Noise

Posted · Add Comment

If you live almost anywhere in suburbia, you can feel like you never have a quiet moment.  Either you’re assaulted with the literal noises of the outside world, or you’re overwhelmed by the noises of fear and doubt and worry and uncertainty that spin around in your head.  Wherever you are, there is simply too much noise!

Being struck down by a stroke or a chronic illness of any kind can send deafening noises to your head.  At first, you have the noise of taking in the enormous changes that have happened to your body.  The more you take in the information that means you’ll have to adjust to a new normal in life, the noisier it gets.  After all, you didn’t ask for these changes and you know you don’t want them.  In fact, you want your old life back and the sooner you can do that, the better.

The problem is that the old you no longer exists, and the new you has only one choice.  You have to stop the noise and find peace.  Is that easy? No! Is it possible?  Absolutely!

The way I know that it is really possible is because I went through that noisy stage after my stroke and I finally discovered I had to make a choice. I had to choose to take the noise and put it at the feet of God.  I had to turn it over, lay it down, and give it up.

At some point, you have to be willing to sit in the calm of God’s embrace, putting yourself squarely in His hands and surrendering your circumstances to Him in honest prayer.  Tell God about your pain and your worry and your anger and your unhappiness and everything else that fills your head with noise.

Tell God you are ready to simply wait and listen to Him.  He will show up! He will help you find peace again.  If you don’t believe me on this one, I simply suggest that you try it.  Try it today and the world will quiet down.

May you be blessed with the peace and presence of God with each sunrise.

In quietness and trust is your strength.
