The Call to Love

You may wonder what a guy who spent years as a CEO and CPA may know about love, but trust me, I learned some things in my stroke experience. God knows how to help you be a better partner and He can shine a light on your marriage.

Since it’s Valentine’s week, I wanted to share with you the ways my relationship with my wife, Brenda, changed after having a stroke. Brenda and I met in high school and we were genuinely friends from the very beginning.  We went to the same college and over the years, we’ve helped each other and watched out for each other.  We’ve always enjoyed a good relationship, but since the event of my strokes, our relationship is better than ever.

Maybe some of you are a bit like I was.  You work hard, do a lot of overtime, come home exhausted, say two words to your spouse, and climb into bed.  You’re too tired to do much else.  Well, after the stroke, that all changed for me. Brenda was always my wife, but today she is my full-time partner in every sense of the word.

I discovered there were a lot of things I hadn’t ever shared with her.  She didn’t know some basic information about how our bills were paid, or what my passwords were on my bank accounts.  She didn’t even know that I had invested in the part time use of an aircraft.  I simply kept a lot of my business endeavors to myself.  All that has changed and you may want to consider this kind of change too.  After all, if you’re in a coma, you need to be sure your spouse knows how to get to your family bank accounts to pay the bills.

One of the reasons I’m grateful for my strokes is that I have renewed my commitment to Brenda who is the love of my life.  I thank God for her every single day.  She will always be my Valentine.  Is there more you need to share with your Valentine?

“I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.”
