Mark on the Move

One Step Forward; Two Steps Back

Posted · Add Comment

If you’ve been in the recovery process for a while, you may find yourself feeling like you always have to take a step back before you can move forward. That process can feel very slow and you may wonder if it’s worth the effort.

Every morning when you rise, you have choices to make. You may think to yourself that you are tired of trying and you’re done with this recovery thing.  You’ll just accept life as it is and give up.  You may imagine you have nothing left to give!

I want to ask you to rethink that idea.  I’d like to remind you that when you choose to “give up” you are not only giving up on yourself, you are giving up on God!  Trust me when I tell you that there were many times when I considered the option of giving up.  I did not want to keep trying.  I did not want to take one or two or ten steps back before I could move one step forward.  I did not want to, but I did.

What kept me going?  For one thing, gospel music played through my headset all the time. You can’t listen to gospel music without hearing the message that God is with you, that God knows your situation, and that He is even now working with you to make things better.  Gospel music is not “give up” music.  It’s “give it over” music.  It’s trust God music.

You may take a step and fall down and take another step and fall down, but that is not the end of your story.  You may not know exactly where God is leading you, but you can be sure that He has a plan for your good.  He sees you and the effort you are making and He won’t ever leave your side.

It’s okay to take one step back, but you don’t want to stay there. Trust God to help you take each step forward into a brighter future and a better day.  God does not want you to give up on yourself, and He surely doesn’t want you to give up on Him.  Take another step in His direction today!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
