This past year when I was speaking to a church group, someone asked me what my biggest challenge was as I worked to recover from my two strokes. They wondered if it was harder for me to learn to walk again, or to speak confidently, or to simply feed myself or drink some water. At the time, everything was a challenge. Everything seemed hard. In fact, it seemed so hard, I wasn’t sure I could do any of it.
Then as I did what I could to meet those challenges, I discovered that they were nothing compared to the challenge of being willing to trust God. I had to stop imagining that it was all up to me to get better. Yes, I had to do the work, but I also had to believe that God had a plan. I had to trust that He was working with me every day, every moment to help me clearly understand that He was there.
This question is one I continue to ask myself. As we begin a new year, we may all want to look at our personal challenges and ask ourselves whether we believe God is with us right now. Do we believe that He will be walking with us as we enter another year? Can we trust Him for all our needs no matter how big or how small they may be?
I believe we can. I believe that any time one of God’s children is faced with a challenge, doing everything humanly possible to make it through some tough circumstances, that God is doing everything divinely possible to help them. Trust Him. If you haven’t tried to trust Him before, try it now and watch His hand at work in your life. May God bless you all through the coming year!
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
