Beyond Grateful

Posted · Add Comment

We recently celebrated Thanksgiving and like most Americans, I gathered with my family and counted my blessings as the turkey and the ham and our favorite vegetable delights were passed around the table.

When you’ve experienced a life-threatening illness, and have been blessed with renewed health and strength, it isn’t hard to feel grateful.  In fact, I can tell you that I have lived every day since my stroke with an attitude that is beyond grateful.  I now understand, in a way I may never have understood before, that every moment of life is precious.  God’s extraordinary gift is to grant us daily opportunities to live in His presence and to shine His light on those around us.

As I looked around my own Thanksgiving table, you can be sure that I was praising God for my wife and my children and my grandchildren.  I was thankful to be able to sit and laugh with them and enjoy the gifts that each of them bring to my life.

I used to think it was nice to give God special gratitude on Thanksgiving, but ever since my strokes, I give God thanks with a kind of gusto I never had before.  Life cannot be taken for granted.  It must be lived with joy and with intention to honor God in our hearts every day of the year.

As you reflect on your own family and the many joys you share throughout the year, I encourage you to give God the glory for all He does to provide for your needs, strengthen and heal you, and give you His abundant grace.  May your heart be filled with a joy that goes beyond grateful every single day.

Come, let’s sing for joy to the Lord. Let’s shout praises to the Rock who saves us.
Let’s come to him with thanksgiving.

Psalm 95:1-2, NCV
