A Cleansing of My Soul

Now and then you experience life in a way that cleanses your soul. It changes your view and helps you discover God in a new way.  Like Moses coming down the mountain after meeting with God and receiving the Ten Commandments, you’re changed. Your soul is cleansed and you’ll never see things exactly as you did before.

Okay, my experience may never be recorded by MGM, but it was one that gave me new eyes to see and new ears to hear.  My wife, Brenda and I had the privilege of going to Haiti with a medical-missions team of doctors and nurses, and people like me who simply wanted to volunteer.  We were there to serve, but it turned out that we were served in return.

I knew Haiti was an impoverished country.  I knew that I would see people who were the poorest of the poor.  Few of them have hot water, even running water or things we take for granted, like indoor plumbing. Fewer still have anything but a menial job.  Many are ill and have thyroid issues from the iodine in the water.

These are people who have every right to look at the world as nearly impossible.  They are survivors and I realized that they work harder to survive than I ever did as I tried to get through a stroke. These people have a stroke that can’t heal, at least it won’t heal without lots of help from the rest of us.  They have a land that does not provide, and yet, I met some of the most genuinely kind and happy people I’ve ever seen anywhere.

The people of Haiti love God and flock to church, even standing outside in the sun, simply to hear the Word. They appreciate life and all that is done by teams such as ours to help them.  I came away from this experience a changed man, a cleansed soul, one who saw God in action in ways I never could have understood from the vantage point I have and the place I live.  I came away grateful, impacted by people who found a way to win in spite of the odds.  My spirit was enriched and my life was blessed.  I will be working from now on to help the Haitian people however I can.  I hope you’ll join me in that pursuit.  It will do your heart good. It may even cleanse your soul.

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10 ESV
